I see this all the time, moms at 38 weeks reaching out in my DMs because they need advice on an intervention they weren’t expecting. Better to be over prepared than underprepared in this case. So let’s avoid that 38 week reach out and get informed instead!
The blood pressure, fluids, ultrasounds, non stress tests, cervical checks, induction talk- ALL COME UP sometime after 36 weeks. It is better to be over prepared than underprepared in this case. The best advice I can give you is to get INFORMED – and before 36 weeks.
Here are some tips on getting informed:
Take THE RIGHT birth education course.
If you are birthing in the hospital, it needs to be an advocacy based birth course. Unmedicated Academy is it- it has all the things you need for understanding birth and for learning how to manage unmedicated birth. This is the typical birth class stuff, right? But it also teaches you about your rights, the alternatives, the evidence, how to advocate and how to get the support you need from your partner. Plus, it’s so much more than just a course because you get weekly check-ins with me and the other Academy moms.
DIY your birth education
You can DIY your education too- I have a great freebie in the library for you. The Intervention Research Checklist is a list of everything to research to be SUPER informed and know your options. If you are going to DIY you birth education let me suggest a few free resources for you:
Birth books from the library
Podcasts like this or Down to Birth, Birthing Instincts, and Evidence Based Birth.
THE Internet! You have endless access to research articles and materials from birth educators and other experts in the field. How blessed we are to have this because moms even 10 years ago didn’t have as much access as we do now! This is something to remember when arguing with your OB about being informed- this is new to them too and that’s good, it’ll force them to up their game if WE come in droves.
Grab your DIY Intervention Research Checklist so you can start getting informed right now.
