Even if you are not a doula, you do not want to miss this episode! Kallie, a birth keeper and traditional doula in South Florida, and I chat about how we are both self taught doulas after experiencing training that taught us next to nothing about being a doula. Listen in for reasons that doula certification is BS and how you can become a self taught doula.
Why doula certifications suck
Some are ridiculously expensive, the gatekeeping of doula knowledge that allows only those who can shell out the dough to say they are certified doulas.
They lack depth of knowledge. Kallie and I share how both of our different trainings had SO much info yet we felt like we learned nothing.
Certifying births, many of these programs expect women to work for free, or very little pay, to before they can take on “official” clients.
The rules and regulations. Supporting women in birth should not be regulated, yet doula certifications constantly tell doulas what is allowed or not allowed as doula support.
How to become a self taught doula, in 4 easy steps
Consume education (books, podcasts, training) on physiologic birth.
Look within yourself to see what’s holding you back from birth, and dismiss it.
Find a doula mentor, local is best.
Start supporting women, connect with local midwives to find your first client.
