Want to have a powerful and positive birth experience? It’s time to go all in. I have noticed that the moms who start sooner, who bring the questions, who extend their learning- they are typically the most mentally and physically prepared for birth. Listen in for how a recent client of mine made big time and money investments to have an empowered pregnancy, birth and postpartum.
Here are the 5 things she did!
She made a huge monetary investment and carefully selected her care team. Your provider’s values and their practices around birth can greatly influence how your birth experience turns out. Think of it like this, a provider who thinks birth is just about getting the baby out, who doesn’t think you need to be pregnant past 39 weeks, and who wants you to push on your back is going to result in a very different experience than having a provider who who trusts that birth has its own timing, lets mom lead with her intuition, and doesn’t believe in checking the cervix. Regardless of what the moms values are and how much she advocates, it WILL be vastly different experiences with those two providers.
There is a way to influence your birth experience for the better by choosing your birth place, provider and setting up the right support team. You cannot just rely on having a doula and the unicorn midwife. My client knew that, and she made a huge time investment to get really informed and educated on all her options. She wasn’t only enrolled in Unmedicated Academy, she was also listening to birth podcasts each week, and reading birth books.
As a first time mom, there is no way to really experience birth (aside from maybe attending birth!) but the next best way to get that experience is to experience birth from books, other moms with the same birth values as you, the right birth course, podcasts, etc.
Exercise is so great in pregnancy to feel good, keep blood sugar in check, stay low risk, etc. She had a walk and swim almost daily in her weekly routine and I know she was also doing some balancing and stretches specifically for pregnancy. All of these things can help you have a fast birth and let me tell you, she had her baby one hour after I got there and 5 minutes after the midwife got there. That’s pretty fast for a first time mom.
This mom was so on with her nutrition. She drank Nora, one of the books she had on her coffee table was real food for pregnancy, and she was also prepared with the right postpartum meals too. When we nourish our bodies by eating the right foods and being active, we can stay low risk. Usually the mother who goes above and beyond to take care of her body is able to better weather the intense physical demands that come up in late pregnancy and birth.
The 5-5-5 rule, if you don’t know what this is, it is 5 days IN the bed, 5 days ON the bed, and 5 days AROUND the bed. Meaning you are resting for the first 2 weeks postpartum, not walking, not going up and down stairs, not cooking, not cleaning etc. This mom not only went all in during pregnancy, and birth, but also with her healing in postpartum.
What this mom really did was have the right mindset that pregnancy, birth and postpartum are a journey. Not something to rush through to get to the next, but to truly honor each stage and give yourself what you deserve to feel empowered.
